History
The first Owens Chapel United Methodist Church was build in 1834 on land given by James Owen Jr., born in Warren County, North Carolina. Both he and his wife, Sophronia Murphy were buried there in 1880. The site of the Owen’s Chapel Cemetery is on the land owned by James Owen Sr. who was born in Dimwittie County, North Carolina. He and his father Valentine Owen were Revolutionary War soldiers. He is buried in an unmarked grave by the side of his son, James Owen Jr.
The First Church was a log cabin, used for worship and for school with dirt floors.
The second Church was built in 1888 and used for sixty-one years.
The third Church , the present edifice, was built in 1949 during the pastorate of the Reverend B. H. Brandon and dedicated by Bishop Roy Short on May 9, 1954
Timbers within the walls and other usable materials are within the walls of our Church, whispering a bit of the past.
